Amon Amarth was formed in 1992 and takes their name from Mount Doom in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth series of books, The Lord of the Rings. Their lyrics mostly take up Viking mythology or history and so the band has been called “Viking metal” sometimes, though they insist that they play melodic death metal music.
Amon Amarth is a heavy metal band, composed of lead guitarist Olavi Mikkonen, vocalist Johan Hegg, bassist Ted Lundström, rhythm guitarist Johan Söderberg, and drummer Jocke Wallgren. The band has released 12 studio albums, one compilation album, one EP, one video album and ten music videos over the course of their career. The first studio album, Once Sent from the Golden Hall was released in 1998. Five more releases followed before breaking through with Twilight of the Thunder God in 2008. The album debuted at No. 10 on the Swedish charts and No. 50 on the US Billboard 200 charts five years ago. Five more albums have been released since then – Surtur Rising in 2011; Deceiver of the Gods in 2013; Jomsviking in 2016; Berserker in 2019; and The Great Heathen Army in 2022.
