“Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’ finally reaches 1 billion streams on Spotify after a decade of rockin’!”
“Enter Sandman” from Metallica’s insanely massive 1991 self-titled album has become one of the most misheard songs in America, has wiggled its way into sports arenas, hocked video games, and become one of the best-known songs in the world. But unfortunately, the song has reached a significant milestone with over 1 billion streams on Spotify, making it one of the most overplayed songs of all time.
Even though Lars Ulrich had become the poster boy for the movement against online music sharing in the early 2000s, this news came after the band celebrated its 10th anniversary on streaming services. Since then, the band has owned their master recordings and started their label. Their music is influential everywhere if you look hard enough.
Among the significant rock tracks that have received over a billion streams are AC/DC’s Highway to Hell, Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and many others. However, with almost 873 million streams, Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” is the only other song that has even come close to another billion streams.
Metallica also shared their Spotify Wrapped statistics on their Instagram account yesterday. It showed that 72.1 million people listened to their music in 183 countries, totaling 1.6 billion streams, or 137 million listening hours.
With the residuals from “Enter Sandman,” Metallica can probably pay for a Starbucks coffee or something with the residuals they earned.
The band plans to release their next album, 72 Seasons, in April, followed by a massive two-year tour. Check out the dates below.

The self-titled fifth studio album from Metallica, commonly known as the “Black Album,” was released on August 12, 1991. It departed from the band’s previous thrash metal style. Instead, it featured a more radio-friendly sound, incorporating hard rock and heavy metal elements.
The Black Album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over 16 million copies in the United States alone. In addition, it spawned several hit singles, including “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” and “The Unforgiven.”
The Black album was recorded at One-on-One Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California. It was produced by Bob Rock, who would go on to have all of Metallica’s future albums. The band worked with Rock to achieve a more polished and mainstream sound, and the results were evident in the finished product.
Despite the departure from their earlier style, the Black Album maintained the aggression and raw energy that had made Metallica a household name in the metal scene. The album’s heavy riffs and solos, combined with James Hetfield’s distinctive vocals, made it a fan favorite and cemented the band’s place in music history.
The Black Album remains one of Metallica’s most popular releases, and its influence can still be heard in the heavy metal music of today. It’s a true classic and a must-have for any fan of the genre.
