Despite announcing his return as Superman in October, Henry Cavill has revealed that he will not be the actor portraying the hero. Instead, new DCEU head James Gunn is moving forward with a young-superhero film that he himself is writing.

“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill said in an Instagram post on Wednesday night. “This changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter [Safran] have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”

Not only did director James Gunn confirm the news on Twitter, but he handed it to us straight. “In the earliest part of our story,” he said, “our Superman will be somebody else.” Exciting prospects, many years from now. Anyway, Henry Cavill and his people are “big fans” who are in talks with us about more things – soon.

Director James Gunn and Allyson Healey Safran both left Marvel Studios as well as their posts as president of production and chief creative officer, respectively on October 25th — just one day after Cavill announced his potential departure from the role of Superman. While there was speculation about Cavill’s new role, the previous regime at DC is said to have cleared it with him before approaching Gunn.

Variety reports that after Gunn helmed the 2014 Marvel blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy, he will now write and direct a screenplay for the upcoming Superman film. Variety further says that Gunn’s background means the character would likely be seen as a young reporter in Metropolis (Metropolis being a fictional city) and meeting iconic characters like Lois Lane.

Sources confirm that despite Henry Cavill’s shift in plans, Warner Bros. is still trying to find a role for him in the DCEU. Additionally, it’s unlikely that James Gunn’s take on “The Black Superman” will interfere with J.J.’s Abrams and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates’ film project.

Henry Cavill first portrayed Superman in the 2012 film Man of Steel. He has departed from the role for the time being, but made one last proper appearance as the character in 2017’s Justice League. The fans got their last chance to see him in this year’s Black Adam when a post-credits scene showed him facing Dwayne Johnson.

Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman may have been cancelled, but Director James Gunn has also decided not to pursue a third Wonder Woman movie by director Patty Jenkins.

A series of tweets from the Wednesday evening, Gunn confirmed the actor Ben Affleck. This confirms that he met with Batman to direct a film.
