Cro-Mags Mini-Editorial

Before the Cro-Mags, the idea of combining heavy metal and hardcore punk was downright absurd! Before them, most bands were either playing straight up metal or punk and there wasn’t really any crossover between the two genres. But then came ‘The Age of Quarrel’, a record that changed punk and heavy metal forever. Released in 1986 by the Cro-Mags, it was an album that fused both punk and metal into one intense sound never heard before. This raw energy mixed with aggression and unparalleled musicianship set the stage for new generations of hardcore music to come afterwards. Fans have often noted how influential this record was on their lives – it gave them a sense of identity, energy and intensity that they hadn’t felt before from other music styles.

The band’s success was further cemented when their 1989 follow up record “Best Wishes” clinched the number 8 spot on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart.

The significance of Harley Flanagan and his band cannot be understated, given that within a short span of time they managed to have an incredible impact on both hardcore music culture and youth culture at large. In addition to their albums receiving praise from critics, many consider them to be influential in establishing New York City as an epicenter for hardcore music.

When I first came across the ground-breaking New York hardcore punk September 1986 classic “The Age of Quarrel” it was towards the end of summer break in 2004. I was only sixteen years old for a little over two weeks. I had just discovered the Sex Pistols and the punk side of the Beastie Boys a month earlier. But upon first hearing “The Age of Quarrel”, I was instantaneously completely floored by what I had just started hearing emerge from my stereo speakers. Like a musical punk rocker Grim Reaper started slashing his scythe straight through in the form of audio hertz upon first pressing play. And within seconds, both my arms were covered in musical goosebumps and music adrenaline just started to rush throughout my mind and body as if my body and mind were alerting me to get ready to jump into an old school 1980’s hardcore circle pit right in my very own bedroom. I listened to ‘The Age of Quarrel’ that day over and over on repeat for at least 3 hours. Until my own Father started banging on the door to shut it off. All I could do was grin and put on some custom made headphones made out of a vacuum cord to listen to more Cro-Mags in secret! True story!
