On a frigid evening in Austin, the Empire Garage played host to a highly anticipated concert by We Came As Romans. With their legion of devoted fans in tow, the Michigan natives took to the stage and proceeded to deliver a performance that was both intense and moving. The sold-out crowd braved the sub-zero temperatures, each one eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite band.
Daggers – The Opening Salvo
As the houselights went down for the final time, the band members emerged onto the stage to thunderous applause. Without hesitation, they launched into the opening notes of Daggers, a soaring anthem that has quickly become a fan favorite. It was the perfect way to kick off the night, and the crowd responded with a frenzy of mosh pits and crowd surfing.
The Darkbloom Album
The latest album, Darkbloom, was the centerpiece of the night’s performance, and the band played it in its entirety. The setlist included standout tracks such as Golden, Doublespeak, and Plagued, each one delivered with a raw intensity that left the audience breathless. We Came As Romans are known for their powerful and dynamic live shows; this night was no exception.
A Tribute to Kyle Pavone
Throughout the night, there were numerous moments when singer Dave Stephens paid tribute to the band’s departed vocalist Kyle Pavone. The two were close friends, and Stephens took the time to share some of his memories of Pavone with the audience. Before playing the classic hit Lost In A Moment, Stephens addressed the sensitive crowd, saying “This was one of Kyle’s favorite songs…” The emotion in his voice was palpable, and it was clear that Pavone’s memory was very much alive on that stage.
Darkbloom and Black Hole – The Encore
After a brief break, the band returned for an encore, and they did not disappoint. The final two songs, Darkbloom and Black Hole, were standouts that sent the crowd into a frenzy. The energy in the room was electric, and the band members clearly fed off of the audience’s enthusiasm.
In conclusion, We Came As Romans delivered an unforgettable performance that was both powerful and emotional. Despite the brutal weather conditions, the band and their fans created a warm and unforgettable atmosphere. This is a band that is at the top of their game, and anyone who has the chance to see them live should do so without hesitation.
Sunday night’s Jingle Jam brought out all folks “Mesmerized” by late 1990s/early 2000s R&B and Rap. Acts such as the Ying Yang Twins had the crowd “shaking’ it like a saltshaker.” While the New Orleans rapper Juvenile made everybody “drop it like it’s hot.” Trina, Lloyd, Ja Rule, and Ashanti all managed to transport me to Jr. High and High School singing along to lyrics I had yet to experience.
Fans were dressed to the nines at the H.E.B. Center at Cedar Park Sunday, December 11, 2022. They eagerly grooved and sang along as the DJs played old-school classics such as Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk”, Soul For Real’s, and “Candy Love” and crooned to slightly newer classics such as Keyshia Cole’s “Love”. The DJs and crowd showed love for newer artists like Glorilla.
Opening act Gemtunes had a ton of energy and moved the crowd. Ying Yang Twins came on the stage with great presence bringing their booty-shaking music, smiling. Forgot how many hits they had. Definitely had everybody testing the strength of their knees with songs like “Salt Shaker “and “Say I Yi Yi”. Of course, when “Get Low” began the audience drowned out Kaine and D-Roc.
Next Trina graced the stage and proved why she owns the moniker “The Badet Bitch.” As an introduction to her performance, the DJ played some female rappers that are clearly the direct descendants of Trina such as the 305’s own City Girls and up-and-coming Memphis, Tennessee-based rapper, Glorilla. Trina looks amazing and was so grateful for the love she received. Of course, she performed the hit that introduced her to the world, “Nann.” The crowd sang along with that specific Miami twang and confidence.
Lloyd walked through the crowd before jumping on the stage. Easy to tell he loved performing. He displayed great physical and vocal talent. Dancing around the whole stage while singing hits like, “You” and “Get It Shawty.” His infectious energy made the crowd rock with the Young Money hit “Bedrock.” Lloyd’s high tenor sounded great live. After his set joined Ashanti and Ja Rule for separate numbers. He even graced the audience with an acapella number.
Juvenile came outpouring the brown liquor of brown liquors, Hennessy. He was one of my favorites of the night. As soon as I heard that New Orleans drawl, I knew I was in for a treat. Juvenile “Set it Off” has so many bangers. It was hard to keep up. From songs like “Slow Motion” to his first hit, “Ha” everyone had a great time. But of course, when the beginning violin notes of “Back That Ass Up” floated through the air everybody went wild. There is something about the magic of Manny Fresh that causes involuntary movement among the masses. I wish I could bottle that level of energy up.
Ja Rule and Ashanti came ready to perform. They haven’t lost a step since the early 2000s. Still love his gruff version of the sing /song rapper. Amazing that some made fun of him at the time for his “thug love” anthems but some of the biggest rappers now sing/talk/rap. It appears to be done with significantly less heart. Both looked great Ashanti sported a multicolored body suit, a rhinestone-studded microphone, and sweet, angelic vocals. At some point, Ja Rule took his shirt off to showcase a well-maintained physique. The rough-voiced rapper and Princess of R&B started their combined set with their hit song “Mesmerize.” Ashanti performed “Happy”, “Foolish”, “Baby” and so many wonderful hits. With her beautiful backup dancers. Ja Rule performed some of his songs such as “Down As Bitch”, and “Put it On Me” as well as a snippet of “Can I Get A…” his debut to the world with Jay Z and Amil. The crowd was truly pleased and made a great show even better. Overall, it was a great show, and I was pleasantly surprised.

On a perfect August summer evening, thousands of people jammed the Germania Insurance Amphitheater close to Austin. It seemed as though it was a throwback to the late nineties again for the Freaks on Parade Tour. Especially with the bill showcasing Powerman 5000, Static X, Mudvayne & of course Rob Zombie.
Powerman 5000 Opens The Show With A Bang
The names of the band include Powerman 5000, led by Spider One, who is the brother of Rob Zombie. Bass player, Murv3 and guitar player Dan Schiz played to the crowd. Murv3 was jumping, smiling, and having an all-around good time on stage. Even though they started the show, they sounded as if they were performing a headlining set. They ended with “When Worlds Collide,” which appeared in one of the early Tony Hawk Pro Skater games.
Static X Powerbombs Austin With Their Iconic Set
The second act of the night was Static-X. Yeah, the band with the singer whose hair looked like the Slim Jim guy. At least, for the uninitiated. It is actually a tribute to the late Wayne Static. The frontman role is now led by Xero, and an arguable case can be made that it is actually Dope Edsel from the band DOPE. The band played 7 songs and announced they would be back in March on a headlining tour.
Finally The Return Of Mudvayne
The sun was starting to set as Mudvayne took the stage. I’d seen a couple of pictures of them from this tour, so I was hoping to photograph them. I had always regretted not seeing them in my youth and this was definitely a show of a lifetime for me. This was Mudvayne s first real tour in over 13 years. Singer Chad Gray has been busy with HellYeah. Gray is a relatively imposing figure. Tall, clad in overalls, a blue mohawk, and a wicked and bloody face painting, all eyes focused on him. The audience in the pit was really pumped up for this set. During the opening song, Gray climbed down from the stage to mount a railing and sing along with his fans.
They played a very emotional performance, exceeding my expectations for sure. Guitar player Gregg Tribbitt looked cool and collected, despite his face being totally painted and wearing goggles on top of it. Bass payer Ryan Martinie ran and prowled across the stage as a man possessed.
Rob Zombie Leads The Freaks On Parade
Closing out the night, was Rob Zombie. Their performance began with Zombie on top of an enormous platform, looking out to the thousands in the crowd, behind me. They followed the song with Triumph of the Beast. After the music finished, Zombie leaped down from the main stage and paced, ran, and posed as a man possessed. As always, John 5 was amazingly talented on guitar and looked completely ecstatic. I was most excited about the theme song to House of 1000 Corpses. That performance was worth going through itself. Rob Zombie and the guys have been doing this for a long time, and it shows they know how to put on a performance!
A hot, humid dusty Texas day saw yet another cancellation of the great thrash metal band, Anthrax, “due to medical concerns” Even after the canceled Dallas date, fans were still hopeful they would be able to perform at Stubbs in Waller Creek Amphitheater as part of their 40th Anniversary tour with Hatebreed and Black Label Society. Anthrax is one of metal’s “big four” along with Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer. The band has been touring since the early 1980s and has released over 11 studio albums. Hatebreed frontman, Jamey Jasta said members of Anthrax promise will return and rock out with Texas fans. Anthrax performed for Thursday night’s August 11th show.

Jamey Jasta and co came out ready to rock. With performances of “Defeatist,” “Destroy Everything,” “Looking Down The Barrel of Today, and so many other songs. The music went hard. Even with an extended set and their energy kept up with the Texas heat. At one point, Jasta encouraged the crowd to get so hype their balls would stick together and titties would drip with sweat like a waterfall. While there was disappointment without Anthrax present, fans had a fun time. The crowd illustrated this with a cloud of dust from moshing. There was a point when I couldn’t tell if the constant haze was from dust or heat. When you go to a Hatebreed show. You do not just listen with your ears. It is a full-body experience, nearly cathartic. In addition to their current tour, it is also the 20th Anniversary of their album, ‘Perseverance’. They will be headlining with Gatecreeper, Bleeding Through, Bodysnatcher, and Dying Wish on various dates.

Black Label Society followed Hatebreed as the final act of the night. Lead vocalist/guitarist Zakk Wylde took the stage in his wicked kilt. While there was a frenzy during Hatebreed’s performance. The vibes for the BLS set were a quieter excitement on the surface. There were whoops of delight and excitement overall and the band had a trance over the crowd. The former Black Sabbath guitarist’s dazzling array of acrobatics on the guitar showed why he is one of the best in the business. Everyone was top tier. Performances of “Destroy & Conquer,” “Overlord,” “Heart of Darkness,” and so many others impressed me. One song I looked forward to, “In This River,” did not disappoint. The song is a heartfelt tribute to his fallen friend and one so many of us can relate to with so many deaths due to the last couple of years. This was my first time seeing Black Label Society but hopefully, it won’t be my last.
