Anthrax Cancel Austin Date, Hatebreed and Black Label Society Continue With Show

Anthrax Cancel Austin Date, Hatebreed and Black Label Society Continue With Show

Words & Photos by Ursula Rogers

A hot, humid dusty Texas day saw yet another cancellation of the great thrash metal band, Anthrax, “due to medical concerns” Even after the canceled Dallas date, fans were still hopeful they would be able to perform at Stubbs in Waller Creek Amphitheater as part of their 40th Anniversary tour with Hatebreed and Black Label Society. Anthrax is one of metal’s “big four” along with Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer. The band has been touring since the early 1980s and has released over 11 studio albums. Hatebreed frontman, Jamey Jasta said members of Anthrax promise will return and rock out with Texas fans. Anthrax performed for Thursday night’s August 11th show.

Jamey Jasta and co came out ready to rock. With performances of “Defeatist,” “Destroy Everything,” “Looking Down The Barrel of Today, and so many other songs. The music went hard. Even with an extended set and their energy kept up with the Texas heat. At one point, Jasta encouraged the crowd to get so hype their balls would stick together and titties would drip with sweat like a waterfall. While there was disappointment without Anthrax present, fans had a fun time. The crowd illustrated this with a cloud of dust from moshing. There was a point when I couldn’t tell if the constant haze was from dust or heat. When you go to a Hatebreed show. You do not just listen with your ears. It is a full-body experience, nearly cathartic. In addition to their current tour, it is also the 20th Anniversary of their album, ‘Perseverance’. They will be headlining with Gatecreeper, Bleeding Through, Bodysnatcher, and Dying Wish on various dates.

Black Label Society followed Hatebreed as the final act of the night. Lead vocalist/guitarist Zakk Wylde took the stage in his wicked kilt. While there was a frenzy during Hatebreed’s performance. The vibes for the BLS set were a quieter excitement on the surface. There were whoops of delight and excitement overall and the band had a trance over the crowd. The former Black Sabbath guitarist’s dazzling array of acrobatics on the guitar showed why he is one of the best in the business. Everyone was top tier. Performances of “Destroy & Conquer,” “Overlord,” “Heart of Darkness,” and so many others impressed me. One song I looked forward to, “In This River,” did not disappoint. The song is a heartfelt tribute to his fallen friend and one so many of us can relate to with so many deaths due to the last couple of years. This was my first time seeing Black Label Society but hopefully, it won’t be my last.

Dropkick Murphys Tour Brings Celtic Punk Rock to Stubbs BBQ in Austin

Dropkick Murphys Tour Brings Celtic Punk Rock to Stubbs BBQ in Austin

The long-awaited Dropkick Murphys tour makes its way to Austin. With high-energy Celtic punk rock and even higher middle fingers at the legendary Stubb’s BBQ Amphitheater.

It’s been two years since Dropkick Murphys brought their signature brand of Celtic rock to Austin. Judging by the hordes of fans decked in scally caps, Doc Martens, and kilts lined up around the block of Stubbs and packed in bars nearby before the show. You’d think it had been a decade or more. The band was finally back in town supporting the release of their 2021 album Turn Up That Dial. Other than co-frontman Al Barr bowing out of the tour to help care for his ailing mother. The show went on without skipping a beat.

The show started with a bang as the band took the stage in full Celtic regalia. Lee Forshner began belting out the classic “Cadence To Arms” on the bagpipes. The moshing kicked off as the band segued into “Do or Die,” followed immediately by “Barroom Hero.”

By the time Ken started chanting out “The Boys are Back,” the fans were surfing across the crowd while beer cans flew overhead. Later in the set, the band brought out their opening acts to join them on stage. Together they played Ahern’s “Caught in a Jar,” The Rumjacks’ “Worker’s Song” and The Bombpops’ “The Dirty Glass.”

As the night drew to a close, the Dropkick Murphys then performed their 2013 hit “Rose Tattoo”. Then followed immediately with the well-timed “Kiss Me, I’m Sh*tfaced” because by that time a number of fans were indeed quite sh*tfaced.

Of course, no Dropkick Murphys tour is complete without the Celtic punk anthem “I’m Shipping Up to Boston.” The crowd chanted along with the full force of 2,500 drunken Irishmen and women. It was the perfect end to a long-awaited night.
