Louder than Life 2022 featured an epic collaboration between Tenacious D and Amy Lee. Jack Black told Sirius XM that Amy posted a message on Instagram expressing her interest in working with the band, which sparked the idea for the performance. The performance of “Kyle Quit The Band” and “Lee” was a highlight of the festival.
‘I’m playing Louder Than Life,‘ she posted on her Instagram. We got to collaborate. Nine Inch Nails, the zoobity boobity from the 12th planet of Mars, and I. Tenacious D is going to be there. Come on, Tenacious D. If you’re listening to my Instagram, let’s collaborate.’ And we said, ‘Of course, we’re going to collaborate with you.'”
In addition to praising Lee’s professional attitude, vocals, and sense of humor, Black said fellow Tenacious D frontman Kyle Gass reached out to Lee.
“Kyle knew her and said, ‘Let’s do this.’ As we did not have time for a sound check or anything, we had to do a little dressing room rehearsal before the show. And she’s so professional. We were like, ‘Oh my God, okay’ when she said, ‘Hey, I have a couple of ideas. I want to do a three-part harmony on Kyle Quit the Band.’
“It’s always about the special thing that never happens,” Black said. “Like, ‘oh my god. Tenacious D and Evanescence.'”
I did a little comedy bit with Amy Lee in which she would come out [and I would pretend I was too emotional, I needed help]. Then, as Amy Lee sang the next song, she said, “Well, I thought it would be funny if you chased me around like a psycho stalker at the end of the bit, and I ran off stage to escape you.” She’s funny and one of the best vocalists in the world.“
