Metal Vocalist Shines with “Holy Diver” Cover on American Idol
An Unexpected Performance on Season 21
Believe it or not, American Idol is still entertaining viewers in its 21st season. Just last week, during the fourth round of auditions, a unique contestant surprised the judges with her powerful performance. Vocalist Rach Karma stepped on stage to perform an acoustic rendition of the iconic Dio classic, “Holy Diver.”
Judges Left Puzzled by Metal Classic
If you’re a regular American Idol viewer, it may not come as a shock that the judges seemed bewildered by Karma’s song choice. Despite her incredible performance, the judges didn’t vote for her to advance to the next round. However, her audition did spark an interesting story from judge Lionel Richie about his unlikely friendship with Rob Zombie.
Lionel Richie shared, “I have not heard that song in a hundred years. I’m a big fan of rock ‘n’ roll. I know this may sound kind of strange, but Rob Zombie happens to be one of my dearest friends.” He then recounted the time he and Zombie collaborated to cover The Commodores’ “Brick House,” dubbing it “Brick House 2003.” Fellow judge Katy Perry was surprised to learn about the pair’s friendship. Meanwhile, country music superstar and judge Luke Bryan admitted that he would have to look up the meaning of a “Holy Diver.”
A Future in Gothic Metal for Rach Karma
Fortunately, Rach Karma’s dreams of stardom aren’t over just yet. She is also the lead vocalist for the Connecticut-based gothic metal band Nevermøuяи, who released their first single, “Release the Demons,” in January this year.
While hard rock and heavy metal genres haven’t traditionally been the focus on American Idol, there have been exceptions. Bon Jovi was featured in a 2007 episode, and Zakk Wylde appeared in 2011 to perform a cover of Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal” alongside contestant James Durbin. With her undeniable talent, Rach Karma might just be the next metal artist to make a mark on the show.
Awesome!!!
