For years, fans have eagerly anticipated the news that John Carpenter would return to the director’s chair. The mastermind behind cult-classic films like Halloween and They Live is known for his particular demands on any project he helms – including being able to watch every game of each NBA season AND playoffs! Recently, during an interview with Variety magazine, Carpenter cryptically acknowledged something “shrouded in total mystery” that could mean a return to directing soon. We can only guess what this mysterious new movie may bring–but we know it will be worth waiting for!
When asked about his directorial return, John Carpenter revealed he’s open to the idea provided there are enough funds and time available – allowing for breaks during basketball season and playoffs, of course! So let’s keep our fingers crossed that this mystery project will soon become a reality.

Although John Carpenter has been taking a break from directing films, he’s still kept rockin’ and rollin’. He recently released several music albums and went on tour – performing worldwide. Plus, fans were thrilled when he returned to the Halloween franchise for both composition & direction credits in David Gordon Green’s trilogy! Not done yet, though: Carpenter also put together a fantastic score for Stephen King’s Firestarter adaptation. So keep your eyes peeled – this guy can’t help but stay busy creating awesome stuff!
Carpenter’s reluctance to return to the director’s chair is no shocker. Two years ago, he laid out his reasoning: burying himself in a movie takes more effort than it pays back. Yet, even when presented with compelling projects, this renowned filmmaker has opted for relaxation instead!
“That’s the problem, see. I’m old. It’s tough,” Carpenter revealed his lack of interest in directing.
Carpenter knew that writing a project without directing it takes effort, too – “Hard work,” he said. Nevertheless, he positively encouraged the idea: “Come on, man! This is going to take some serious commitment!”
If you’re a fan of John Carpenter’s work, here’s something for your wishlist: an adaptation of his spooky comic book series Tales for a Halloween Night!
