‘WHAT DRIVES US’ DOCUMENTARY DIRECTED BY DAVE GROHL

There comes a moment in every musician’s life when their commitment is tested. When their desire to play music for others becomes an almost irrational act of blind faith. this is often not a job, it’s a calling. the first step to prove to yourself and the world that you simply belong in this club is to get in the van. You load your instruments, your talent, and your courage, and take your music to the planet. It doesn’t matter if you’re the Beatles or Billie Eilish, or any artist known or unknown in between, you’ve needed to get within the van to seek out out if you’ve got what it takes. this is often the rock ‘n’ roll rite of passage.

Featuring Interviews with Ringo Starr, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, St. Vincent, Slash and Duff McKagan from Guns & Roses, U2’s The Edge, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Exene Cervenka of X, and Many More

“What Drives Us” may be a testament to the musician’s life. Directed by Dave Grohl, this feature documentary may be a love letter to the rare club of rock and roll, also as an idea to each young kid who dreams of a life playing music. Dave was that child. and so was Ringo, The Edge, Annie Clark, Steven Tyler, and everybody in between. The list goes on forever. While all of them have stories — outrageous, unbelievable, insane, also as poignant stories — all of them share a common bond. At some point, before anyone knew their name, that they had an unstoppable drive to share their music with the planet. Their passion led them to leave everything behind, throw caution to the wind and chase their dream. Nobody was promised anything, but all of them had a plan.

What Drives Us” follows bands Radkey and Starcrawler as they take on the planet, one town at a time, while also telling stories of the most important artists within the music industry, recalling the romance and adventure, also because of the idiocy and chaos, of their own time on the road. The film explores the logistics of what it takes to show a van into a home, and how the tricks of this trade are handed down through the decades. There was a time before the digital age when this is how music and knowledge made its way through the world. You had to take it to the people yourself and hope that word would spread like wildfire. While the planet has changed, the rite of passage has not. there are no other thanks to knowing whether you’ll make it in this business. you’ve got to get in the van.

“This film is my love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music,” said Dave Grohl. “What started as a project to pull back the curtain on the DIY logistics of stuffing all of your friends and equipment into a small space for months on end eventually turned into an exploration of ‘why? What drives us?’”

Dave Grohl has been one among the most beloved and revered figures on the international music scene since his recorded debut with Nirvana on 1991’s generation-defining Nevermind. Grohl took center stage with Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut, the first album during a massive 12-Grammy-winning catalog, including the band’s most up-to-date release Medicine at midnight (2021). Grohl has a well-earned reputation as a prolific collaborator through his work with McCartney, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age, late legends David Bowie and Lemmy Kilmister, as well as mick jagger, Neil Young, Elton John, Nine Inch Nails, Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen, to name a few.

In 2013, Grohl made his debut as a feature director/producer with the acclaimed documentary Sound City about the Van Nuys CA studio where Nirvana recorded Nevermind in 1991, which would sell over 30 million copies and transform the trendy musical landscape. Premiering to unanimous raves at Sundance and achieving a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Sound City focused both on the history of the legendary studio and on the continued fight to preserve the human element of music. Grohl also directed the eight-part HBO docuseries Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, which premiered in October 2014 and went on to win two of the four Emmys that it had been nominated (outstanding sound mixing for nonfiction programming and outstanding sound editing for nonfiction programming).
